Our technical support department often receives emails from clients who want to know what caused their file to corrupt and what they can do to prevent corruption in the future. Unfortunately, there is no easy answer to this question as the possible causes for file corruption are infinite. There are however a few common causes of data corruption and some steps you can take to prevent data loss as a result.

Perhaps one of the most common causes of a file gone crazy is a fluctuation in power. This can be the result of a power outage or power surge, usually caused by weather. It is a good idea to install an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) to protect both your data and computer alike.
Another common cause of file damage is a hasty reboot. If your computer starts acting up or under performing, try to resist the urge to just shut if off with the power button (take that!). This sporadic shutdown can leave your files without time to close correctly and thus become corrupt. Always try to reboot through the Start menu first and leave the on/off button as a last resort.
It is also important to keep your computer running in top condition. Data corruption can occur as a result of a slow or overly taxed system so regular maintenance is a must.
As much as I hope that these tips help, remember that data corruption is inevitable so be sure to make continuous backups of your important data files. For those times that data corruption catches you off guard, the OfficeFIX programs will get you back up and running in no time.
